Wild Berry Campfire Sangria

Serves: 4-6
Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Infusion Time: 2 hours to overnight

Ingredients:

  • 1 bottle (750 ml) of dry red wine (a Spanish Rioja or a fruity Merlot works well)
  • 1/4 cup brandy
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (adjust based on sweetness of the wine and personal preference)
  • 1 cup fresh wild berries (such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries)
  • 1 orange, thinly sliced
  • 1 lemon, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups sparkling water or club soda, chilled
  • Ice cubes (optional for serving)
  • Fresh mint leaves for garnish (optional)

Equipment:

  • Large pitcher or jar
  • Wooden spoon or muddler
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Fruit: Wash the berries and slice the orange and lemon. If you're using wild berries picked during your camping trip, ensure they're safe to eat and thoroughly cleaned.
  2. Muddle the Fruit: In a large pitcher, combine the sliced orange, lemon, and wild berries. Sprinkle the sugar over the fruit, then use a wooden spoon or muddler to gently muddle the fruit to release its juices and flavors.
  3. Add the Wine and Brandy: Pour the bottle of red wine and brandy into the pitcher. Stir gently to combine and dissolve the sugar.
  4. Chill: Allow the sangria to chill in a cool place or a portable cooler for at least 2 hours to overnight. The longer it sits, the more the flavors will meld together.
  5. Add Sparkling Water: Just before serving, stir in the chilled sparkling water or club soda to add a refreshing fizz to your sangria.
  6. Serve: Fill glasses with ice cubes (if using) and ladle the sangria into the glasses, making sure each serving gets some of the fruit. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint if desired.
  7. Enjoy: Sip and savor your Wild Berry Campfire Sangria, the perfect refreshing and fruity beverage to enjoy around the campfire with friends and family.

Tips for Success:

  • For an alcohol-free version, replace the wine and brandy with grape juice and a splash of lemon or lime juice.
  • To keep the sangria cold without diluting it, freeze some of the grapes or berries beforehand and use them as ice cubes.
  • Adjust the sweetness and alcohol content to your liking by varying the amount of sugar and brandy.

This Wild Berry Campfire Sangria combines the rustic charm of outdoor living with the sophistication of a classic Spanish beverage. It’s a communal drink meant for sharing, bringing a touch of celebration to any camping trip or outdoor gathering.
